Innovative research, high level thought-leadership and cutting edge analysis for decision makers
Strategic planning, policy design, stakeholder processes and programme implementation at local, national and international levels
The Paris Agreement provides a new framework for international cooperation on climate change. While some essential elements are already included in the agreement, the details of implementation need to be worked out. We support the successful implementation of the Paris Agreement through research and analysis, in particular modalities of review and the global stocktake, the nature and level of commitment in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the possible shape of a long term goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions at national level.
Solving the climate challenge means shifting investments from high carbon choices towards zero and low carbon alternatives and helping developing countries to integrate climate concerns into their policies. We evaluate current climate finance flows and develop concrete proposals on how climate finance can be applied most effectively from a funder’s as well as a recipient’s perspective.
Action on climate change is very diverse and has a wide variety of actors, including national governments, companies, cities, regions and individuals. We track the mitigation actions of each, aggregate them and assess their compatibility with the overall objective of limiting the global temperature increase to 2/1.5°C.
Carbon market policies within a broader climate policy landscape are a promising way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We evaluate the effects of the existing instruments, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and national emissions trading systems (ETS), and develop proposals on the future design of new carbon market mechanisms.
Climate change and sustainable development are closely interlinked. Many countries are therefore developing strategies to integrate climate objectives into their national development goals. We support the development of low-emission climate resilient strategies and the implementation of their building blocks such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) as well as associated capacities and institutional frameworks.
The transition to sustainable low carbon energy systems is at the heart of solving the climate challenge. While it creates multiple benefits for societies, it is still a challenge for many governments. We Support countries to design, evaluate and implement sustainable energy policies and measures that drive sector transformations. Our expertise covers the complete sector, from energy supply to end use in buildings, transport and industry.
