WHO WE ARE

NewClimate Institute is a non-profit organisation working in Climate Policy and Global Sustainability, where we generate ideas on climate change and drive their implementation. We raise ambition for action against climate change and support sustainable development through research, policy design and knowledge sharing.

NewClimate

The climate crisis requires bold and immediate action. A deep transformation of our economies is needed to secure the livelihood and well-being of today’s and future generations. Achieving this in a socially equitable and sustainable way presents one of the biggest challenges facing our society today.

The urgency of the crisis calls for collective creative efforts, radical new thinking and technological and social innovations across all sectors and segments of society. Countries which have hardly contributed to the problem in the past now also need to play their part in mitigating climate change while solving other pressing social and economic problems. Policies, technologies and approaches that may have worked in the past may lose their validity in light of the speed at which we need to act.

NewClimate is driven by the need to solve the climate crisis. We are prepared to face difficult questions and dissect them, to then identify, analyse and implement solutions together with our partners and funders. We strive to provide balanced, fair and effective solutions underpinned by the latest available science, with the objective to limit temperature increase to 1.5°C.

Our outputs are made to be shared and used as an open resource. We translate our research and analysis to clear, actionable guidance and recommendations in accessible formats to enable stakeholders to take bold climate action or convince others to do so.

NewClimate Institute is an independent non-profit organisation. We are financed only through individual projects and do not receive base funding. Project funders include government institutions from for example Germany, Netherlands, Norway, France, international organisations, foundations like the European Climate Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation and IKEA Foundation, as well as non-governmental organisations and business associations. The six co-founders are the formal shareholders, but they have distributed the responsibilities for governing the organisation among the whole team of employees.

NewClimate is a group of highly motivated and skilled people. Each of us brings a diverse set of knowledge and personality to the table, and as a group we make full use of our potential.

We are political scientists, event managers, engineers, communication experts, business administrators, writers, natural scientists, data nerds, and much more – what unites us is the will to tackle the climate crisis.

NewClimate believes in a cooperative working style, based on mutual trust and a flat hierarchy where everyone is valued equally. Our work is always a team effort. Each team member has a particular and important role which is defined by expertise and not the job title. Therefore, internally, we do not use job titles. All of our team are actively encouraged to participate in decision making. Everyone has the opportunity to take on internal roles according to their evolving interests and strengths, be they in thought leadership; project execution; coordination of projects and thematic topic areas; effective communication of our outputs; or ensuring the efficient functioning and health of our organisation. Nevertheless, we experience that job titles can, in some situations, convey certain expertise and breadth of experience to our partners, funders and wider audience. We therefore provide our employees the opportunity to choose an external title that they can propose and agree on following a peer-exchange process.
