In recent years, Argentina has published a series of key policies to guide its low-carbon transition, including the National Mitigation and Adaption Plan, as well as its National Strategy for International Climate Finance.

During the implementation phase of these policies, the project will support Argentina to improve its policy framework and implementing capacities to enable a low-carbon and climate resilient transformation in key economic sectors. The project will implement activities along four output dimensions. It will:

  • strengthen Forest and Landscape Restauration (FLR) as per national strategies and ensure that forests are in the process of regaining ecological functions and productivity and implement restoration projects on a local level,
  • strengthen the national strategy for sustainable consumption and production by adopting two sector specific national programs for fostering resource efficiency,
  • develop a national framework for more resilient transportation infrastructure & energy efficiency in cargo transport; and
  • support the National Climate Change Cabinet (CNCC) to ensure linkage to the national CC strategy (NDCs, Long Term Strategies LTS) and the 2030 Agenda (SDGs) as well as strengthening of institutional cooperation and development of finance incentives.

This project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Government of Germany and runs from November 2023, until November 2027. Within the Federal Government, the IKI is anchored in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). Selected individual projects are also the responsibility of the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Within the project, NewClimate Institute leads work on supporting Argentina’s climate finance strategy under output dimension IV.
