The work programme on just transition pathways, established at COP27, aimed to assess, design, and scale up pathways to achieve the Paris Agreement goals in a way that is just, equitable, and leaves no one behind. “Just transition means different things to different people depending on their context,” noted UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell at First High-Level Ministerial Roundtable on Just Transition, held last year in Dubai. “But one thing is clear: we cannot leave behind marginalized groups. Climate solutions must be inclusive.” After two COPs, a holistic and operational approach to just transition remains incomplete. It’s increasingly evident that the climate crisis cannot be addressed without equitable resource distribution and clear identification of primary hotspots requiring urgent attention. Sustainable consumption and production must be recognized as two sides of the same coin, allowing policymakers and economic actors to rethink systemic economic actions.
Event objectives:
- Facilitate discussions among diverse stakeholders, including, researchers, policymakers, and economic/financial actors, to share perspectives on what a just transition means.
- Highlight and explore systemic strategies for integrating Just Transition / Wellbeing Economy principles into socio-economic policies, emphasizing their role in tackling the current climate crisis.
- Generate actionable insights and recommendations for accelerating the transition to circular, low-carbon societies, focusing on the nexus between inequality and climate change.
